Mission Statement
We are a voluntary health organization dedicated to assisting people who have, or will have intestinal or urinary tract stomas by providing psychological support and educational services; support to the family unit; advocacy; and by promoting the services of the organization to the public and professional communities in South Jersey.

What is an Ostomy?
An ostomy is created when part of the usual elimination route needs to be bypassed or removed:
Colostomy is a stoma in the colon (large intestine)
Ileostomy is a stoma in the ileum or small intestine
Urostomy is a stoma for the urinary tract
Continent Ileostomy is a surgical variation of the ileostomy, and is also called a Kock pouch.
A reservoir pouch is created inside the abdomen with a portion of the terminal ileum.
A valve is constructed in the pouch and a stoma is brought through
the abdominal wall. A catheter or tube is inserted into the pouch several times a day
to drain feces from the reservoir.

People with a stoma usually wear a discreet plastic pouch to collect the body's waste.
Some ostomies are "continent", requiring no external pouch.
